Guy Dauphin Environnement embarks upon an eco driving programme with Transics

French recycling company chose Transics’ eco driving programme, TX‑ECO, to optimise its operations. In the space of a few short months, it experienced a significant reduction in fuel consumption.

Guy Dauphin Environnement (GDE), one of France’s leading recycling companies, treats and recycles waste, mainly ferrous materials. The company, including its transport subsidiary, employs 1,400 persons and turned over 1.1 billion euros in 2013.

The operations of GDE are spread over 80 sites, throughout France, and focus on three main pillars:

  • Handling and collection of the waste of companies, authorities and households.
  • Waste recycling – 90% ferrous and 10% non-ferrous metals, giving a total of 2.8 million tonnes per year.
  • Sales of recycled products – mainly targeting the steel and metal-using industries.

Committed to optimising upstream logistics

The logistics activities of GDE can be categorised in two models: transport and handling before (upstream) and after (downstream) recycling.

While GDE relies on its own fleet, composed of 346 trucks, for upstream distribution, the downstream distribution is done by subcontractors. The cost for the upstream logistics activities amounts to EUR 3,500,000 per month, an amount that GDE wanted to reduce by enhancing its delivery times and reducing fuel consumption.

In the beginning of 2013, GDE called on Transics to help it optimise the upstream processes. In just six weeks, the company’s 346 vehicles were equipped with Transics’ fleet management solutions and the TX-ECO eco driving programme.

Gaining control of its own fleet was a must, yet also a big challenge for GDE. The company selected Transics’ fleet management solution and TX-ECO driving programme, as it was confident that the features for duty time follow-up, tracking and tracing / geolocalisation and eco driving would be of great help to optimise its fleet management.

Great benefits, both immediate and in the long term

Today, the fleet management software indeed helps GDE better control the duty times for both transport and handling operations, thus fostering a better deployment of the fleet.

The eco driving strategy, for its part, has led to substantial savings in fuel consumption. TX-ECO, Transics’ eco driving programme, provides GDE with insight into the driving behaviour of each driver and each vehicle: the emergency brakes, idling, the number of revolutions or the distance driven freewheeling. To encourage the drivers to commit to eco driving and truly enhance their driving behaviour, GDE initiated a “driver challenge” programme. The result: GDE has already managed to cut its fuel consumption by 4.95% compared to the same period last year (September to January). Moreover, the company believes that it will be able to further reduce costs, in the longer term, as the adapted driving behaviour will help reduce the wear of brakes, tires and other materials.

“Our transport costs make up a large part of our operating costs, so we really want full control over these expenses, more so as part of our logistics is done by subcontractors,” says Philippe James, International Transports Manager at GDE. “It is crucial to closely monitor the costs and take action in the part that we can control, i.e. the upstream supply chain. Transics’ fleet management solution has quickly proven its worth and confirms, day in day out, that we have made the right choice.”

“It was very interesting to us to find a solution for GDE, which does part of its logistics in-house. We are proud to help the company establish a smart logistics strategy and optimise its fleet management,” adds Loïc Kervella, Commercial Manager of Transics France.
